School news: Public PreK and School Openings

June 3, 2011

Joyce Szuflita, of NYC School Help, is our School Expert, and always has the scoop on what’s going on with schools. She is doing her informative and popular “Intro to Nursery School” talks in July and August and her “Intro to Public Schools” talk in July, August and September. If the terms unzoned, district-wide, city-wide and gifted and talented cause you to start to twitch- Joyce can help set you right. If you want to understand the differences between charter, magnet and dual language schools- she can make it clear.  Lastly, her “High School Choice: Calm and Clear” talks are in July and August.   If you want to know what to look for and ask for in a school- Joyce has wonderful insight.

Joyce sent her latest “scoop” to me tonight:

Public PreK
Word from the DOE is that prek placements will be out the week of 6/6 and I have heard that registration will be from 6/8 – 6/17 so that would indicate you may know by Monday or Tuesday if you have a seat.

School Openings

If you have heard that you are wait-listed for a nursery school, now is the time to confirm with the school that you want to remain active on the waitlist. These lists often move. If you are looking for a prek/fours program the waitlist will move after the public prek registrations end on June 17.
