The fire domes at Pier 1 are gone, gone, gone

Thank God somebody finally came to their senses and had the mettallic domes removed from the Pier 1 playground. This April,  park-goers took the temperature of the orbs and discovered the temperature of them was an astounding 127.9 degrees…and they were burning children.

Here we are, a full 4 months later, and they are JUST being removed.  That’s some fast work.

The New York Times reported that “Elizabeth Mitchell, a spokeswoman for the Empire State Development Corporation, which oversees the park, located near Brooklyn Heights, said the domes were removed on Friday.” She went to say that “they are being replaced (even as we speak!) with a new red house and fairy castle, which are age appropriate for small children.” She said officials expected the work to be finished “by this weekend, weather permitting.” The playground was closed Tuesday evening, and construction appeared to be underway.
