Be a Mindful Mother: 10 Tips for Self-Care

Mother’s Day is right around the corner and what better way to celebrate than with some tips on being mindful and taking care of ourselves—plus, a fabulous playlist from Heidi Lengel, founder of Fulheart Family Support


Motherhood is such a complex experience, and there are so many opinions on how to do it “the right way”. When those voices start nagging you (internally or externally!), take a moment to reflect on how you can be mindful and care for yourself. Equipping your own mind, body, and spirit can make such a difference in your energy and approach to parenting.

Want to start pouring resources into yourself while on this crazy motherhood journey? We compiled a list of 10 self care tips and created a playlist to help keep you centered.   1. Listen to your body. Honor what it is telling you.
  2. Be consistent in taking care of yourself each day.
  3. Follow through when your body tells you it needs to rest.
  4. Exhibit patience with yourself.
  5. Don’t take yourself (or motherhood) so seriously.
  6. Give yourself a break when you ‘mess up’.
  7. Learn from yourself, your children, and others.
  8. Forgive yourself when you make a mistake.
  9. Be present.
  10. Express gratitude & love to yourself for the amazing work you are doing.

Heidi Lengel, MMT, MT-BC, Certified Doula, received a Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy from Temple University in 2004 and a Master of Music Therapy from Temple University in 2012. She specializes in the areas of pre and perinatal pregnancy & birth support, pregnancy loss, and maternal mood disorders. Heidi is board-certified through the Board Certification for Music Therapists (CBMT) and is a member of The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) as well as the Association for Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPAH).

Heidi is dually certified as a birth and bereavement doula (StillBirthday). She is also Vice President of The Philadelphia Maternity Network, a member of PALS (Philadelphia Alliance for Labor Support), a childbirth educator, and a passionate maternal mental health advocate. Heidi uses all of her knowledge, training, and skills to support women and families traveling through any pregnancy, expecting any pregnancy outcome.
