Everyone knows kids are the cutest things on earth, no matter what they wear. But there is a whole amazing world of fashion out there for them, and we’re always curious about the coolest finds. We caught up with one of our all-time favorite style contributors, Amelia Gray (of A Gifted Baby) because we wanted to know about what’s trending in the world of cozy-and-adorable for the cold weather. Her style and vision are some of the best we’ve come across, and here are some of her top choices; enjoy!
Best Off-Beat Animals
Obviously a perennial bestseller for children’s clothes, this division is always full of strong contenders, but this fall it is bunnies for the win! What sets these little darlings apart is that there is something just a bit off-kilter, not sticky sweet, more like a Sour Patch Kid (mmmm now I want leftover Halloween candy).
When I first saw the cartoon woodland creatures giving me the side-eye from Mini Rodini’s fall collection, I thought maybe they were too cool for me. But then I realized my kid is way cooler than me, so it’s no problem. The bunny motif comes in a bunch of different color ways and styles. I decided I had to have the onesie suit in dark blue with pink. I love the unconventional navy with blush mix, because I think it’s gender neutral. This piece has parent-friendly design features like the hood, snaps all the way down to the ankle, and roll-up cuffs to fit for longer.
For bigger kids I love the velour sweatshirts with a single bunny motif from the same collection. (Mini Rodini Rabbit Velour Sweatshirt $69, available at lepetitorganic.com.) I think this one is going to be a classic. Don’t be afraid to get a larger size for next year.
Next up is a wacky but friendly bunny from the wonderful UK-based brand The Bonnie Mob, who makes all their designs with the softest fibers, and such a great sense of fun and humor. Jax the rabbit comes on a romper in grey and pink color ways, and combines two of my very favorite things: rabbits and pockets. His buddy Jetson adorns the sweatshirt version
(Jax Romper $59.90, available at agiftedbab.com). The sweatshirts from the same collection and the romper in pink are available directly from The Bonnie Mob (Jax 3D Bunny Pocket Romper and Jetson Bunny Pocket Sweatshirt, from $41.46, at available at thebonniemob.com.).
It wouldn’t be fall without cozy sweaters!
My first pick is from the gorgeous little woman-owned Spanish brand Babaá. I wanted this amazing button-back short-sleeved number so badly. (Jumper No5 Ochre €90, available in larger sizes, get on the waitlist now for smaller sizes on their website).
I got a hot tip that you can actually wear it with the buttons in front as well, so it’s like two sweaters for the price of one. I’m also told shipping is ultra-fast when you order online.
Equally beautiful is this cardigan from it-brand Bobo Choses. I spotted the pink in the wild on a very stylish little girl, who looked politely irritated when I told her how much I loved her sweater, like she had already heard it multiple times that day. (Knitted Bicolor Cardigan in Pink in babies’ and kid’s sizes from $96, available at thepixietrunk.com; Knitted Bicolor Cardigan in Red and Blue in kid’s sizes from sweetwilliamltd.com.)
Prepare to lose your heart to the Misha and Puff Gloucester Tam.
There, what did I tell you? Irresistible, right? The Nutmeg color pictured here feels just right for fall, but it also comes in a beautiful blue called “Ink,” both made of hand-dyed merino wool. Just try and say no to the matching scarf hand-knit and hand-dyed in Peru. The Nutmeg scarf seems to be sold out everywhere but you can still snap up the scarf in Ink, and get on an email list for the Nutmeg at the designer’s website. (Misha and Puff Nutmeg Gloucester Tam $58, available at ladida.com; Gloucester Scarf in Ink $78, and email list for the Nutmeg colorway at misha-and-puff.com.)
Leather feels so warm and classic for fall, and these soft and luxurious-looking bows and headbands from mom-run Pitchoun Designs add just the right touch to finish a look for your little. I picked up clips in dusty pink and black, and so far I’ve been able to match those to most things. I especially like the Petite Rose Bow. The subtle menswear/tuxedo silhouette keeps it so fresh. (Clips and headbands $10 and up available at pitchoundesigns.com).
Best Fall Boots
Every fashionable kid knows…it’s just not an outfit without the shoes! Here are two wee boots I’m loving for fall.
The Rika from Donsje Amsterdam has a nice high shank for dipping your toes in the snow, Velcro parents in a hurry, and criss-cross leather detailing for straight-up style. Donsje, (Dutch for “fluffy”) is a mom-run company that uses the highest quality leather, and takes care that all their designs are handmade under fair trade conditions. (Rika Lined Ochre Leather Boots $69, available at agiftedbaby.com.)
For another great option, add some shine to the grayest winter day, with a cheery dose of metallic on the Kiny Smiley style from Easy Peasy, in blue, pink or beige.
You can slip these on to your little ones’ feet with confidence, since Easy Peasy uses only the safest vegetable dyes. (Easy Peasy Kiny Smiley Slipper Shoes $61.92, available at childrensalon.com.)
I had to throw this category in for my fellow design fiends! We all know it’s time for a seasonal interiors refresh, right? Check out these insanely cute Superhero pillows. They will give any nursery or big kid’s room a hit of super powers (available at nikoandava.com).
And finally, I have to tell you about a wonderful new discovery I made, Lewis, a smart and well-priced line of organic kids bedding from two women with a truly original perspective who use clean, appealing colors in just-right doses and unusual motifs like moths, onions and barnacles on their crib sheets. I had to have the barnacles in navy, but my husband was outraged I didn’t choose the onions in magenta. (Crib sheets in various patterns $36)
