Lightbridge Academy is a new daycare opening in Prospect Heights. They are still under construction and currently accepting enrollment for their infant, toddler, preschool and pre-k programs. We spoke with the director, April Bethune to find out what makes Lightbridge Academy special and what they are offering the community. Take a look and note that there is a Parent Information Session coming up on Saturday November 19th at 10:30am. Details are below.

Tell us about Lightbridge Academy and what makes your daycare and preschool stand out?

We are more than just a daycare, we are the Solution for Working ParentsTM – our goal is to ease the stresses of working parents and provide a balance of nurturing care with quality early childhood education. Our new state-of-the-art facility with outdoor learning space includes a biometric finger scanner upon entry, extended hours, ParentView® Internet monitoring, parent eCommunication app, back-up and drop-in care, extracurricular activities, optional nutritious meal plan, included snack and Parent’s Night Out events. We also offer American Sign Language and Spanish classes and we accept infants from 6weeks old.

How would you describe your approach and philosophy to early education?

We use a “Whole” child approach – This is based on the key learning’s of early childhood education experts such as Maria Montessori, Jean Piaget and Howard Gardner.

Every interaction is an opportunity to learn. We achieve this by stimulating our classroom environment that expands on a child’s innate abilities through various learning centers. This encourages a learning-is-fun philosophy.

Lesson plans are developed through themes, building on the skills children acquire at various ages and stages of development. These lesson plans are integrated with seven learning domains, and we believe that each domain is equally important to a child’s growth and development. These domains include: math & science, creative arts & music, language & literacy, social & emotional, sensory, physical & well-being and cognitive.

Which features at your school do you believe will serve Brooklyn families well?

Parents are going to love our brand new state-of-the-art-facility and our use of technology to resolve some working parents’ concerns. The biometric finger scanner allows a smooth and safe drop off and pick up process. Our ParentView® Internet monitoring and parent eCommunication app allow parents to stay in contact with the school and their child throughout the day. We incorporate interactive whiteboards and iPad tech tables with manipulatives to make our lessons extra dynamic and compelling.

We also offer extended hours of care, summer camp, part time hours, optional meal plans (with vegetarian selections available), parents nights out and on-site extracurricular activities – all of which help parents work out their busy and varied schedules.

Tell us more about the webcam option and your open communication approach?

We have an open door policy – parents and authorized visitors can drop in at any time to see their child throughout the day. For those parents who are unable to drop-in, we go overboard keeping them connected. We offer:

  • ParentView® Internet monitoring: real time in classroom closed circuit cameras allow parents and even grandparents to log in and see what their child is doing at any point of the day.
  • Parent eCommunication app: provides parents with daily reports, pictures, videos, important classroom announcements and reminders. Also a great tool for parents to bring to doctor visits, as it saves all information and is available to access at anytime.

What do you look for in your teachers and staff?

Our teachers must align with our core values. We look for individuals who light up when students master new skills, inspire all those around them, find just the right words that bring comfort to a parent and build confidence in every child. They should take their profession to heart and be eager to deepen their knowledge base in early childhood education best practices, be lifelong learners, offer innovative, creative, and hands-on ideas.

Regarding qualifications, we look for Child Development Association Credential ™, a minimum of an Associates degree in child development, a Bachelor of Arts in Education with focus in Early Childhood Education or a Masters in Education. And they are all CPR and first-aid certified.

Do you have any open house/parent information sessions or admission sessions coming up?

We are currently accepting applications for the 2017/2018 school year and are planning Parent Information Sessions that will go over our admission process. Enrollment forms are currently available on our website.

We are offering discounted tuition rates for parents who sign up during construction. Our next Parent Information Session will be on Saturday November 19th at 10:30am. You can RSVP directly through our Facebook Page.

Please follow us on Facebook for all upcoming information and to complete our survey on operating hours so we can best serve our Brooklyn community!
