December 6, 2012

When women’s clothing boutiques in L.A. started offering juice and coffee bars to shoppers,  the idea caught on quickly. Customers stayed and hung out and it was a vibe. A new bike shop and juice bar that opened in Windsor Terrace this week works under the same premise: rent and shop for bikes or get your own repaired all while mellowing out with a fresh juice or coffee/tea.

The new shop, billed as “family oriented” and mother-owned, The Juice Pedaler, is the brainchild of Deborah Capone and Nicole Bilu who wanted to create a business that promoted healthy living for the whole family.

Capone and Bilu met when their kids started going to school together about seven years ago.  Deborah, who owns three preschools, and Nicole, an event planner and restauranteur, came up with the idea for a bike shop last March.

The juice menu is seasonal, market priced and sourced from local, organic produce whenever possible, and there is even a juice menu just for kids. If you are are looking for a hot drink, savor Stumptown espresso drinks or one from a selection of teas from Republic of Tea. The cafe features both indoor and outdoor seating with views of an edible herb garden, hanging lanterns, and their bikes.

The rentals, all KHS neighborhood comfort bikes, are $30 for the day or $15 for two-hours, perfect for running local errands or lunch-break laps in the park. Add baby seats and kids’ bikes to the rental order so the whole crew can take a ride.

The service shop, located at the back of the garden, is run by head of Bicycle Operations, Andrew Schaper, “who brings to the business his years of experience working in bicycle maintenance from the largest bike shop in the Midwest to the oldest in Boston to a custom frame builder in Norway.”

Services include: fine-tuning, flat fixes (starting at $10); installing child seats ($35) or customizing a new bike for its rider. Basic tune-ups start at $60. And, the Juice Pedaler offers the rare compliment of an espresso or fresh juice while you wait for your bike.
