Fabulous Theater Lineup at Skirball – Get Tix Soon

July 20, 2012

If you are like me and eagerly anticipate the beginning of theater season in NYC, then you are equally excited by all the season announcements that have been coming out in the last couple of weeks.  NYU Skirball for the Performing Arts’ lineup looks pretty spectacular- and if there is only one show you can attend there- you MUST see Mummenschanz. It’s absolutely fabulous.

The New York debut of the 14-year-old prodigy El Carpeta, and return of matriarch La Farruca—both of the legendary Los Farruco dynasty, the first family of Gypsy flamenco dance.

I selected just a few  of the performances to highlight, but visit Skirball’s site for the full season. (They aren’t all kid-friendly just sound super cool. You have to check each performance for age recommendations).

The Joshua Light Show

The Joshua Light Show        [VISUAL ART / MUSIC ]
The Joshua Light Show returns to Greenwich Village for three special evenings of explosive art with acclaimed musical artists of our time, including: Grammy-winning percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie & experimental harpist Zeena Parkins; pioneering minimalist composer Terry Riley and son, Gyan Riley; an electrifying ensemble of musical legends John Zorn, Lou Reed, Bill Laswell, and Milford Graves; and indie psychedelic pop giants Ben Goldwasser & Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT. Utilizing signature projection techniques, including lumia and the fabled “liquid light” for which it is remembered, The JLS improvises an intense visual experience to complement the sensation of live music.

Kollaboration New York        [TALENT SHOW]
The nation’s largest Asian-American talent competition returns for its seventh straight year in New York City. Finalists chosen from a wide pool of rising Asian-American performers will have a chance to perform live to compete against each other for the chance to be named the Kollaboration New York 2012 Champion.

Fiorello!        [MUSICAL THEATER]
Fiorello! tells the story of three-term New York City mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, who took on Tammany Hall and revitalized the city. Known as the “Little Flower,” LaGuardia was an honest man in a sea of corruption, who fought for his diverse constituents.  In this election year, Fiorello! celebrates all that is good about government and politics.

¡Festival Flamenco Gitano! Farruco Family: El Carpeta y La Farruca        [DANCE]
This performance marks the New York debut of the 14-year-old prodigy El Carpeta and the return of matriarch La Farruca—both of the legendary Los Farruco dynasty, the first family of Gypsy flamenco dance.

Mummenschanz        [THEATER / COMEDY]
The troupe creates a playful and uniquely memorable experience through an inventive use of forms, shadow and light and creative manipulation of sculptural, expressive masks. The result is a visually stunning spectacle of family entertainment that sparks the imagination and transcends cultural barriers.

The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer        [THEATER]
Over the last four years, The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer has been on a remarkable journey, touring worldwide and consistently attracting sold-out crowds, rave reviews and prestigious awards. The “ingenious” (The Guardian, UK) one-man micro-epic puppet show melds technology and multimedia into a touching story of enduring love and the end of the world.
