This weekend we found tons of events in our city’s parks- which means a) the events are free b) you can enjoy some greenery c) get some relief in the shade and d) enjoy lots of area to run around while enjoying planned activities. At International Youth Day, you can participate in this world celebration of children by enjoying poetry, songs, dance, and musical performances. There might even be enough wind to fly your homemade kite at the Brooklyn Kite Festival. How about some practical advice? Learn how to make ice cream at the Tavern on the Green with Van Leeuwen Artisanal Ice Cream or perfect your photography skills at the Photo Safari at Belvedere Castle & Shakespeare Garden and the NYC Photo Safari at Madison Square Park (fee for this event). Pier 6 Open with New Fishing Area

The 15,000-square-feet of lawn space is now open on Pier 6. The gorgeous space features a 1.6-acre destination playground called the “The Water Lab” complete with sprinklers, ropes, a sand box, swings and slides, a volleyball court, an outdoor food court and a new fishing area located along the north edge of Pier 6. The CDS “Emergency Preparedness Workshop
This informational talk will discuss how to protect our kids from predators. Hudson River Park’s Big City Fishing
This free Big City fishing program is a fun way to learn how to fish. Through the program you can also learn about the Hudson River environment where a staff member will discuss ecology, water quality, and the types of fish species that live in Hudson River Park’s Estuarine Sanctuary. All of the necessary supplies including rods, reels and bait, as well as formal instruction are provided. This program is also a catch and release fishing with no casting. International Youth Day, designated by the United Nations, is an event that takes place around the world to celebrate children. GE’s solar-powered twist on the family favorite carousel is landing in New York’s South Street Seaport for the month of August. Housed in a collection of salvaged shipping containers, the DeKalb Market opened last week bringing together Brooklyn’s creative entrepreneurs. Located on a old containers and barren land, they are creating a new green space for downtown Brooklyn by housing vendors in 22 re-purposed shipping containers. Expect to find food vendors that range from soul food to vegan, boutique vendors like our favorites Rasany and Hank & JoJo, along with artists and makers of all kinds.
