It’s a good day in school-starved Brooklyn when we can announce that a new preschool is opening. It’s an even better day when we can announce that it’s a preschool that we know will be of high quality.
Bija Kids, a reputable and locally loved yoga school and camp for kids, is opening a preschool this fall. And that’s not their only news. Bija has really stepped up their offerings and has cued up Prenatal Yoga, Mommy and Me Yoga, Tweens Yoga, and pajama parties all along with their current offerings of afterschool pickup, birthday parties and their regular adored yoga classes for kids.
I dropped my kids off at Bija’s yoga camp this morning and checked in with Bija Kids’ director Lauren, who has big ideas for the new amenities starting this fall: a soothing reception space, separate yoga studio and classroom space, custom-built cubbies and a barn door that will create one general open space with an airy aesthetic that will suit not only yoga aficionados but young minds.
We know Bija Kids quite well having twisted and danced in yoga classes with them for a couple of years. I have taken adult yoga from Lauren and our family has attended Family Yoga for many months. Despite the effort it took to get my family out of pjs for a 10 am Saturday class, we all did it. The biggest boon? Both our children are now experts in a good facial massage. My just-3-year-old daughter has gone to Bija’s yoga camp for a couple of weeks and is so happy there. She walks right in with the slightest flick of her wrist to say goodbye, puts her things away in the bins and settles onto the rug with a set of blocks or dress-up box before her morning yoga routine. Apparently, their preschool program will be structured much like the summer camp: circle time, yoga, open play, art and learning projects and more.
This preschool alternative for your 2-4 year old might be just what you and your child needs for a gentle introduction to school: local friends, community work, a good balance of play and thinking and a happy social environment. It’s totally green too: eco-friendly cleaning supplies, organic snacks, wood toys, recycled art materials and composting waste. They only have 4 spots left, so if you want to check out their Open House this Wednesday, August 17 from 6-7 pm, you better get your name in quickly!
