Organic Crib Mattresses: What to Look for and Where to Find them

July 27, 2011

As I mentioned in the first part of this series (we covered organic twin mattresses), non-organic mattresses in the U.S. are not exactly safe. They are actually dosed in highly toxic chemicals like polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), mercury, boric acid, and formaldehyde! These mattresses can also harbor dust mites that trigger asthma and allergies. Learning about this was shocking (to say the least) and made me re-think what my children are sleeping on and breathing in every night.

In general, when you are looking for an organic mattress you will come across terms like organic wool, organic cotton and natural rubber. Organic wool comes from shorn sheep raised and fed without pesticides or hormones and organic cotton is made from pure, organically grown and harvested cotton and should have a tag that says 100% organic certified cotton. This generally means that cotton was hand picked and grown organically without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or defoliants to fertilize the crop, control plant growth or pests. Natural rubber is harvested by tapping the milk of the Hevea Brasiliensis tree (rubber tree) whose juice is extracted, poured into a mold and then baked.

Additionally, natural rubber is not only safe but it is ideal for kids that are prone to allergies since natural rubber is anti-microbial, hypoallergenic and mold- and mildew-resistant. I uncovered a list of some organic crib mattresses companies that cover a wide-range of prices and most importantly don’t contain chemicals that are harsh to your children or the environment.

Naturepedic: A Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic mattress and bedding manufacturer, Naturepedic has a line of organic mattresses, bassinets, sheets, pillows, changing pads, and non-toxic crib mattresses. Their classic crib mattress ($259), made from organic cotton, includes 150 coils. This mattress is also hypoallergenic, waterproof, and firm. They also have a 2 in 1 ultra crib mattress ($399) that the company states will grow with your child. Made from organic cotton (in both the fabric and the filling), this waterproof mattress has a quilted side with 252 coils that is firm, hypoallergenic and non-toxic.

East Coast Organic Mattress Store: East Coast Organic specializes in the Dunlop mattress method for mattress production. Essentially this involves harvesting milk juice from the Hevea Brasiliensis (a rubber tree). This milk is then poured into a mold with hollow pins and baked to produce a blend of organic and chemical-free wools used for their mattresses. They have several crib mattress like the Natural Dunlop Sri Lanka Latex baby mattress ($499). Made from certified organic wool and pure Northwest Oregon/California wool, the mattress is said to be extra firm and contain no PVC’s, flame retardant chemicals, synthetic fabrics, plastics, formaldehyde, dyes, or polythene.

Absolutely Organic Baby: An organic mattress company that sells organic bedding, mattresses, and bedding. Their line of organic cribs includes the Organic Innerspring Crib Mattress ($310), a mattress with 260 coils treated with tung oil and beeswax for an all-natural coating. This mattress is also made from organic cotton and a thick layer of organic wool. The company states that the wool is naturally flame retardant without using any chemicals. They also sell an Organic Coir and Lambswool Crib Mattress ($355) that is made from coir – coconut husks which are coated in natural latex. This non-toxic mattress is also dubbed as “the most breathable organic mattress in the U.S” by the company whose filing is also 100% organic.

Lifekind: An organic home company, Lifekind sells two types of crib mattresses and an oval one for the bassinet. Their Standard Organic Crib Mattress ($545), with for 280 coils, is made with cotton/wool that is basically a cotton core quilted with wool and then cotton. They also sell a Standard Organic Crib Mattress — Natural Rubber mattress that is made of natural rubber with cotton and wool for $645. Both mattresses come with a 20-year limited warranty and meets the Green Guard product emission standard for children.

Savvy Rest: An organic company that sells all-natural latex (Dunlop or Talalay) mattresses. The Savvy Baby ($489) crib mattress from the company is nontoxic and made from firm Dunlop natural latex. The company also sells a crib and a wool and chemical-free mattress pad.
