Famous Ina May to come for big evening in Brooklyn

February 21, 2011

I remember purchasing a lot of books when I was pregnant. That’s what I do. When I’m in a new situation I read my way through it- and one of those books I read through my pregnancy was Ina May Gaskin’s famous book, Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth. Ina May is probably the most famous midwife in America.  As a 40 year practitioner she has seen varied births, helped many families and encouraged women to see birth as a beautiful thing, not something to be scared of. She is a natural storyteller, so her stories are not only engaging, they are real and yes, were too “granola” for me at times, but overall overwhelming inspirational.  And now, Ina May Gaskin is coming to Brooklyn to celebrate the debut of her new book Birth Matters: A Midwife’s Manifesta  (Seven Stories Press; April 2011).

The new book looks at why birth matters to all of us.  With one in three babies born via cesarean, the US ranks behind thirty other nations in neonatal mortality rates, and forty other nations in maternal mortality rates.   Amnesty International recently released a damning report titled “Deadly Delivery: The Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA,” which outlined various failures in the way the US health care system treats pregnancy and birth. Confidence in women’s bodies and women’s choices has been lost.

Ina May is speaking at 5pm on March 6th at the Warsaw Polish National Home (which doubles as a major concert venue by night for Williamsburg and Greenpoint). The Warsaw is located directly across the street from the new store and center Caribou Baby. Caribou Baby will be hosting the Ina May pre-party from 3-4:30 pm, before the doors open to her event. Inside the store they will be offering refreshments and snacks, and event-goers use of their bathroom and their multiple baby changing stations as they wait for Ina May to go on.

Caribou Baby’s grand opening extravaganza will be running the whole weekend (Mar 5th and 6th), offering many free class demos to the public, tentatively to include babywearing, babywearing for dads, cloth diapering, infant massage, development and movement, yoga for toddlers, talks on the role of a doula, pain relief techniques during labor, etc. Carriers, cloth diapers and other prizes will be raffled off throughout the day. They will be announcing the final grand opening schedule as well as the raffle details to their mailing list, twitter and FB friends, so sign up to receive updates on our website!
