My favorite stretch of a commercial street is in Park Slope on Bergen Street between Flatbush and 5th Ave. I used to go to Pintchik Hardware all the time when I worked as an Art Coordinator on tv commercials- even when we were filming in Manhattan. It was known as the cheapest and best place to buy bulk cans of paint. Back then, it was surrounded by lots of well…nothing I was interested in. Now, it has everything I like: Bump Brooklyn (stylish clothes whether pregnant or not), Babeland (yes we go there!), lululemon athletica (my “go to” yoga clothes), Bark (some of the best dogs in Brooklyn), Ride Brooklyn (great bike stock, knowledgeable and honest bike enthusiasts – even if their service can be slow), and Private Stock (a bit like my old fave mens’ boutiques on 8th Ave in Chelsea). There’s a new organic food shop that opened as well, Sun In Bloom, which I have yet to try. Anyone? I also haven’t visited Melt yet, though I’ve had their food at parties.
This great stretch of street has been owned by the Pintchik brothers, Michael and Matthew for decades. Slowly, over the last 2.5 years they have created a colorful strip of unique stores.
These eclectic boutiques have pulled together to host a 2 day block party with events and performances to celebrate Vogue’s Fashion Night Out on September 10-11th. They will also be selling raffle tickets to raise money for the Center for Anti-Violence Education. It’s sponsored by Pintchik Ace Hardware. Bump Maternity and I are co-sponsoring the awesome kids’ band: City Stomp!
The Bergen Lot Party will kick off on Friday, September 10th with individual boutiques staying open until 11 pm, hosting in-store events in conjunction with Vogue Fashion’s Night Out and by occupying the empty lot between 450 & 448 Bergen Street for a Lot Party from 8-11pm. The Lot Party will feature local DJ’s and hip-hop artists (DJ Derek Beres & Fresh Daily) and wall projections, food, cocktails & beer will be available from Melt, Bark and Sun in Bloom. Babeland will be testing sex smarts at their Trivia Table and there will be rewards for correct answers and Private Stock will be hand rolling cigars.>
Photographer Alex Brownwho’s work has been featured in major publications including Elle, Vice, Soma, Slam, and Trace magazine will be setting up a photo booth inside a tent and conducting 5 minute portrait sessions (www.alexbrownphotography.com) and Eponymy will be on hand with a trunk of oldies but goodies to give costuming, styling and prop advice.
To celebrate their involvement with Vogue Fashion’s Night Bump Brooklynis collaborating with Trudy Miller Layers who will be in-store hosting a trunk sale and a “Tummy Tamer Workshop” with tummy camouflaging (need those!).
