Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Jr. Day so take the kids and enjoy the 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March, The 32nd Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at BAM, the GingerBread Lane Giveaway at the New York Hall of Science and the last day of the Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden. Monday January 15th

2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March (UWS)
Monday January 15th 10a-2p. Free. March Starting Point: Eleanor Rossevelt Monument. Manhattan Country School eighth-graders will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by taking to the streets of Manhattan to speak out about what they consider to be the most pressing civil rights issues of their time. The theme of this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March is “A New Revolution: Youth and Social Change,” inspired by the quote “Every generation needs a new revolution.” Along the route, students will stop at locations of significance to the fight for civil rights to deliver speeches about contemporary social justice issues. The general public is invited to join MCS students, families, alumni, staff, friends and supporters for this educational and uplifting annual event.  See the website for all the details of the event.

The 32nd Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at BAM (Fort Greene)
Monday January 15th 1030a. New York City’s largest public celebration in honor of iconic civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. returns to BAM for the 32nd year. This event brings world-renowned activists, intellectuals, and civic leaders together with musicians and other performers to pay tribute to King’s legacy and keep his message alive. Join us for full day of free events, including a movie screening, a talk, and an art exhibition. Keynote Speaker: Jelani Cobb. Please Note: Tickets to this event will be distributed on a first come, first seated basis. Lobby doors open at 8am.

GingerBread Lane Giveaway at the New York Hall of Science (Flushing Meadows)
Monday January 15th giveaway is from 2 – 5 pm; line starts at 1 pm. Free with Museum admission. On January 15, take home a piece of GingerBread Lane. Gingerbread houses from the exhibit will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis until every piece of GingerBread Lane is gone. Please bring a box or bag (flat-bottomed shopping bags or paper grocery bags work best) to carry your gingerbread loot home. No Gingerbread Lane houses will be distributed without a bag or box, so make sure you bring yours along! Houses range in size from 20 inches (wide) by 15 inches (deep) by 30 inches (high) to 4 inches (wide) by 4 inches (deep) by 12 inches (high).

Freedom Songs and Stories with Tammy Hall at the Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park
Monday January 15th 2p (sold out) & 3p. Free. Registration required. Register here. Join Prospect Park Alliance at the Lefferts Historic House this Martin Luther King Jr. Day for Freedom Songs and Stories with Tammy Hall. A masterful storyteller, Tammy Hall weaves together diverse tales from around the world to create a rich experience for all. Tammy Hall will be leading two sessions, beginning at 2 and 3 pm. Stomp, Clap & Sing with Carlos Lazarus & Friends at the Central Brooklyn Public Library
Tuesday January 16th 11a-12n. Free. Location: Dweck Center. Carlos & friends deliver a delightful musical experience that will also enhance your child’s learning skills. You’ll sing, dance, and even learn a little Spanish. Families will be given seating priority. Seating is limited. First come, first served.

Open Play at Busy Bodies Brooklyn (Clinton Hill)
Tuesday January 16th 1130a-130p and daily at various times. See the website for the schedule. $20/drop in. Open play welcomes children from newborn to 4 years old. Give you and your child the space you both need to play, learn and socialize. Open play will assist your child in building important developmental skills. Let your child roam freely in a bright, safe, engaging environment with a variety of toys, mats, art supplies, books and games. There is something for every child to indulge in at Busy Bodies. Join us to make new friends for you and your child.

Lil Yogis: 3-5 year olds at Bend & Bloom Yoga (Park Slope/Gowanus)
Tuesdays 4-5p*. $18 for a drop-in (class packs also available). Mat rentals are included for all Kids Classes. Please note: Minimum age of 3 years old. We love your 2-year-olds! Please bring them to our Tots classes.  Bend & Bloom’s imaginative yoga adventures and animated poses keep little yogis’ creativity and bodies flowing. Our silly yoga sequences enhance children’s concentration skills while refining their motor coordination. Bend & Bloom’s fun yoga games teach cooperative play and sharpen listening skills as your child transitions to school. Kids’ yoga will plant the seed for a life-long love of physical and mental well-being. *Adult Hour Flow class runs at the same time.

Mommy & Me at Playday NYC (Long Island City)
Wednesdays & Fridays 9a or 10a. First visit $20. Regular price: $35 with packages available. Our Mommy & Me art classes are a great way to spend creative time together with your little one at PLAYDAY! Some days, we will focus on handprints and footprints so you will have beautiful keepsakes! Other days, we have story and art time when we read a story and bring it to life by painting, drawing, collaging, and much much more. This a new place for kids with classes for all ages. Lilypad Music at Flying Squirrel (Greenpoint)
Wednesdays & Fridays 10-1045a until March 16th. $15/drop in. You can catch either Lily or Carl throughout the week at their regular Lilypad sing-a-longs in Brooklyn. This public class at Flying Squirrel incorporates classic kids songs, original songs, Spanish & multi-cultural songs, movement based group activities and of course shakers and scarves! Perfect for ages 0-4 this 45 minute class is all about creating a supportive, engaging, environment for children to explore their own relationship with music, clap their hands and have a great time. Adult participation.

Wednesday January 17th 4-5p.  Free.  Ahoy! People don’t just build on land. They build on water, too! Set sail with us on a thrilling action-packed adventure about a crew of quirky pirates marooned on a deserted island. Throughout the story, volunteers from the audience will help us explore the incredible science behind clouds, flash paper, air pressure, inertia, explosions and more. Don’t miss this refreshing nautical tale with a twist!

Puppetsburg Show at Ibiza Kidz (Stuyvesant Town)

Thursdays 330-415p until March 22nd (no class 2/22). Drop in $28. For ages 4-6p. Young artists will travel around the world on an artistic journey, exploring 2-3 dimensional multi-cultural art activities, including Mexican frescos, Kente cloth weaving and Brazilian Carnivale masks. Adult participation.

Game of Jewish Life at the Jewish Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Monday January 15th 12n-4p, Tuesday-Thursday January 16th-18th 1-4p and various times until February 22nd. See website for schedule. $13/person includes Museum admission. In an adventure filled, life size Game of Jewish Life, you’ll find out how many steps to take using a giant spinner! Then, you’ll get a chance to celebrate your birthday with a mystery present box and a giant birthday cake! Start the school year with our magnetic classroom scene and add your good dead to the wall of Mitzvos! And for all those here for serious business, there’s a puppet theater to experiment with your favorite career!

Block Party at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Ongoing until June 10th Tuesday-Sunday 10a-5p (open until 6p on Thursdays). Free with Museum admission. BLOCK PARTY brings together the elements of the iconic Brooklyn block party all under one roof, including a series of dimensional stoops set against a backdrop of artistic facades of residential buildings, and different ”street” and green spaces to play games, meet friends, relax, and have fun. Large-scale photographs by Brooklyn-based artist Anderson Zaca, who has long documented block parties in Brooklyn, will be featured and invoke the joy, action, and diversity of block parties celebrated annually across neighborhoods in New York City. Families will be invited to add to the photographs, and record their own images and experiences in the city among those of their neighbors.

Winter Weekdays: Free! at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Drop-In Sessions at Children’s Museum of the Arts (SoHo)

Join CMA’s WEE teaching artists for an art-filled drop-in session when the museum is closed for general hours. Tots Drop in Center at Congregation Beth Elohim (Park Slope)

Design your own structures in our popular exhibit Brooklyn Block Lab. MAKE IT! Creativity abounds in our art activities that change each week. TOUCH IT! Ed Center in Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1
Tuesdays & Thursdays 3-5p and also Saturdays and Sundays from 1–5p (except 11/23, 11/25 & 11/26). Free. The Ed Center is open for free, drop-in hours three afternoons a week! Get to know Brooklyn Bridge Park with our 250 gallon aquarium filled with critters from the East River, a 10’ scale model of Brooklyn Bridge Park, crafts, a reading corner, and much more!

Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden (Bronx)
Ongoing various days/times until Monday January 15th. See website for ticket prices. Advance reservations are strongly recommended. Enchanting model trains zip through a display of 150 landmarks, each re-created with bark, leaves, and other natural materials—all under the twinkling glow of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Marvel at G-scale locomotives humming along among familiar sights such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and Rockefeller Center on nearly a half-mile of track. This year’s exhibition showcases Midtown Manhattan’s iconic skyscrapers and other architectural wonders, featuring new replicas of the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, General Electric Building, and St. Bartholomew’s Church.

16th Annual Holiday Train Show in Grand Central (Midtown)
Daily 6a-8p until Sunday February 2nd. Free. The holiday season is a time of joy for kids of all ages and nothing says holiday enchantment quite like dazzled little faces watching in wonderment as model trains zip through tunnels, by subway stops, around familiar skyscrapers and through iconic cityscapes. To the delight of kids and railroad enthusiasts alike, the New York Transit Museum will continue its tradition of capturing hearts and imaginations at the 16th Annual Holiday Train Show at Grand Central Terminal starting in November and running through the New Year. The theme of the holiday train show changes every year and the event is free and open to the public.

Gingerbread Lane at New York Hall of Science (Flushing Meadows)
Monday-Friday 930a-5p & Saturday-Sunday 10a-6p until January 15, 2018. Free with Museum admission.Visitors can marvel at homemade gingerbread houses made entirely of edible gingerbread, royal icing, and candy. The houses are drafted, designed, baked, planned, built and decorated by creator Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. GingerBread Lane has won the Guinness World Record for 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 for the largest gingerbread village. Lovitch’s creation will again contend for this year’s Guinness World Record. Also check out the website for information on the Gingerbread Workshops happening during the holiday season.

Free Skating at The Rink at Bryant Park (Midtown West)
Daily 8a-10p until March 4th. Admission free! Skate rental: $20. Rink hours are weather permitting. See the website for all the bag check information. The centerpiece of Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park, this 17,000 square foot rink features free admission ice skating, high quality rental skates, and free skating shows, special events, and activities. Many Holiday Shops are open on major holidays so start your shopping early!
