Recipe: Berry Kale Smoothies
Eliana has been hanging out in the kitchen with me since she was just a few months old. Her “involvement” in the cooking process has ranged quite a bit over her first 26 months.
For her first 18 months, her participation evolved from zonked-out tiny baby dozing off in the carrier while I cooked, to curious 5-8 month old sitting on the counter safely secured in her Bumbo seat and tasting ingredients as I worked, to interested 8+ month old playing with some of my tools sitting on the floor of the kitchen.
But, since she was around 18-months old, Eliana has been hanging out with me at the counter watching me prep and cook, playing with her own tools (or stealing mine) and even helping me out, too.
Lately, we’ve been taking advantage of all the delicious, seasonal fruits and vegetables at the local farmers markets by using produce to make smoothies for breakfast. Eliana loves to help me fill the blender by tossing in the fruits and vegetables. She also loves to push the buttons on the blender and watch the ingredients become a liquidy and tasty treat.
This Week’s “Kids in the Kitchen” Tip:
Little kids can help out in the kitchen by filling (and emptying) containers and pushing buttons.
Berry Kale Smoothies
- 1½ cups or 12 ounces Greek yogurt
- 1 ounce kale, ribs removed
- 1 banana (frozen or raw)
- 1½ cups berries (strawberries and/or blueberries)
- ½ cup milk (cow’s milk or vanilla almond milk)
- 1½ tablespoons maple syrup*
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds or wheat germ
Put all ingredients into a blender and purée until smooth.
*Omit the maple syrup if using vanilla almond milk because it adds enough sweetness

Some kitchen appliances make loud noises that can be upsetting to teeny tiny chefs. To keep them from getting scared, give them a warning that the noise is about to start.
Use a raised step stool to get your little one safely at counter height. Eliana uses the FunPod while we’re in the kitchen together.
Jory Lieber is a food-focused mom and at-home chef raising her baby girl, Eliana, to eat a variety of healthy foods right from the start. When Eliana began to eat solid foods at around 6-7 months of age, she set a goal to cook as much of her food as possible.
