Developing a smooth breastfeeding relationship with your baby is very important to new mothers, yet (as we know) it is not always easy. Early support is imperative for a successful outcome, so we’ve compiled some helpful resources for Brooklyn families to help you along the way.

Carriage House Birth‘s Greenpoint location has a Wednesday Breastfeeding Support Group led by Rachel King, IBCLC. There is a also monthly “pumping and returning to work” the last Wednesday of each month, just after the breastfeeding group. CHB also has wonderful Certified Lactation Counselor Service offerings. 10:30am-12:00pm/$30

Also in Greenpoint, Wild Was Mama hosts a Friday Support Group led by Patricia McGuire, IBCLC. 10:30am-12:00pm/$30

Brooklyn Birthing Center has a Lactation Program, directed by Jennifer Leopold, IBCLC, LMSW,  that includes the following services: breastfeeding classes for expecting parents that are open to all (whether or not they are a client of Brooklyn Midwifery Group), comprehensive breastfeeding education that is integrated into your prenatal care, and postpartum home visits with a registered nurse two days after delivering at Brooklyn Birthing Center. Other breastfeeding mothers who don’t deliver at Brooklyn Birthing Center can see lactation consultants in their office. Lactation consultants are available on-site by appointment. If you find yourself struggling with breastfeeding at one week, one month, six months, or twelve-plus months postpartum, their lactation consultants can help. You can make an appointment with their lactation consultants even if you are not a client.

La Leche League (LLL) offers local, individualized support. Every day, moms seek help from their volunteer leaders through phone calls, in-person local meetings and breastfeeding cafés. Not only will you meet LLL Leaders at these events, but you’ll also have the opportunity to connect with other local like-minded moms. There is a wonderful and intangible benefit to seeing other women who are or have been in the same position you are. Bay Ridge, Borough Park, Fort Greene, Marine Park/Madison, and Park Slope and Windsor Terrace all have regular meet ups.

New York Methodist Hospital’s Breastfeeding Support provides a class is led by one of the Hospital’s certified lactation consultants and it covers a variety of topics related to breastfeeding. They include getting started, proper placement, benefits of breastfeeding and common problems. It’s free to couples enrolled in the Prepared Childbirth Course, but all must register. One registration per couple. One class fee of $50.00 is required for couples not registered in the Prepared Childbirth Course.

Tribeca Pediatrics has an IBCLC on staff, Quetzal [Ket-sal] Currie who’s been working with new and expectant moms since 1997. She is a midwife as well, and brings both clinical skills and parent education experience to her work. Quetzal is able to give advice over the phone or help determine if a home visit or visit to your doctor is needed.  There is no charge for Tribeca Pediatrics patients for this service.  646-836-9299. Discuss specific breastfeeding and newborn care concerns during a comprehensive one-hour session. $300/visit. Slope Pediatrics Breastfeeding Support provides groups led by Freda Rosenfeld IBCLC.  Tuesdays from 12:15pm to 1:30pm at 60 Eighth Avenue. Topics will include general feeding, nursing in public, introduction of bottles, returning to work, teething, introductions of solids and more.
