NYC public schools don’t open until Thursday and there are some great events going on so take the kids and enjoy Race Around the Farm Yard in Prospect Park, New York Caribbean Carnival Parade, Back to School Special at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, 9th Annual Back To School Bash at Habana Outpost,  Movies @ the Library: Army Dog at the Eastern Parkway Brooklyn Public Library, Library Lab: Shadow Puppets at the Brooklyn Public Library, Transit Tots at New York Transit Museum, Beach Season Extended at various NYC locations and TORUK – The First Flight at Barclays Center.

Back to School Special at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS)
Monday September 5th at various times.  Free with Museum admission.  Get ready for a great new school year at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan! You’re invited to design your own new school supplies, get inspired by Little Dude the dog, dance along to your favorite songs with Miss Kim and say hello to celebrity literary pets.  See the website for the schedule of events.

9th Annual Back To School Bash at Habana Outpost (Fort Greene)
Monday September 5th 11a-2p.  Free.   Dance, win prizes, get your face painted, adorn yourself with glitter tattoos, and create some cool art and school essentials out of recycled materials! The event is FREE and so are all of the giveaway goodies like notebooks, pencils, rulers, and much much more!  Special features include Blue Poppy face paint, a sky-high stilt walker, a Big Silly Guy, Habana’s famous human-powered Bike Blender, and special raffle items to get kids and parents ready for the school year!  Habana To Go (across the street) will also offer 1/2 off their Kid’s Menu as a Back To School Bash special!

New York Caribbean Carnival Parade 2016 (Crown Heights)
Monday September 5th 11a-6p.  Free.  One the famed Eastern Parkway Cultural Row!  A Caribbean cultural extravaganza known as NYC’s “Greates Show on Earth”, this colorful Parade of costumed revlers and millions of spectators enjoy music, camaraderie, fun, food and family as they “Jump-up” to the scintillating sounds of Soca, Reggae, Salso, Zouk, Kompa and Calypso!  Parade starts from Schenectady Avenue along Eastern Parkway with a grand finale at Grand Army Plaza.

Labor Day in Prospect Park
Monday September 5th 12n-5p. Join the Prospect Park Alliance this Labor Day for family-friendly activities at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, Lefferts Historic House and the 1912 Carousel.  Nature Exploration 12–5p:  Prospect Park Audubon Center, Free.  Join the Prospect Park Alliance for nature education programs at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, the first urban Audubon Center in the nation.  Discovery Pack, 12–4 pm: The Prospect Park Alliance invites you to get inspired by nature with our new Discovery Packs, a ready-to-go kits filled with nature activities for families.  Blooming Naturalist 1–2 pm: So you think you are a Naturalist?   Find out at the Audubon Center by learning how to identify birds and use binoculars and field guides. Participants can even create their own tube of lip balm and an Official Blooming Naturalist button.  Nature on the Go! 2–3 pm: An Alliance Naturalist will lead children and families to areas near the Audubon Center, where you can learn about the nature that is all around us and participate in a Citizen Science project.  Race Around the Farm Yard 2–4p: Lefferts Historic House, Free.  Get out and get moving in the Lefferts yard! The whole family can participate in potato sack races, spoon races, stilts and other old fashioned games.  Carousel Rides 12–5p:  Children’s Corner, $2 per ride, $9 for a book of 5 tickets, free with Alliance Family Plus membership.  Celebrate with a ride on the Park’s beloved 1912 carousel.

Tuesday September 6th

Free Music Together Demo with Naomi’s Music at Kiddie Korner (Brooklyn Heights)
Tuesday September 6th 10-1045a.  Free.  Come sample a Music Together class before the fall session begins. Standard Classes are for Mixed Ages 0-5 together with the adults who love them. Our BABIES classes are for newborns up to age 8 months. Classes run for 45 minutes. We have two locations, in Brooklyn Heights at 117 Remsen Street (Kiddie Korner/Congregation Bnai Abraham) and in Boerum Hill 97 Bond Street (Jnana at Atlantic Avenue).  See website for other upcoming free demos.

NURTUREPALOOZA! Outdoor Open Play at NURTURE{BKLYN} (Windsor Terrace)
Tuesdays & Thursdays 330-5p.  $10/drop in.  Family Play membership & class packs also available.  Child-led play, parent/caregiver supervised.  Outdoor open play in our spacious backyard allows children time to get their hands in the dirt and let go!  Tubs for water and sensory play & dirt jams allow your kids time to make a mess you don’t have to clean up.  See website for information on indoor open play.

Movies @ the Library: Army Dog at the Eastern Parkway Brooklyn Public Library
Tuesday September 6th 4-530p.  Free.  A brave Army dog returns to the U.S., where he helps his heroic handler bond with his resentful daughter on a camping trip despite danger lurking around every corner.  Rated: PG, 1 hour and 30 minutes.  Enjoy a family friendly movies.

Taste of Tinkergarten in Prospect Park
Wednesday September 7th 10- Come out for a free trial of a Tinkergarten class! Kids will engage in play-based learning activities that support self reliance, creativity, leadership and problem solving.

Free Moozika Trial Class at Trilok School (Fort Greene)
Wednesday September 7th 430p.  Free.  Come join Moozika! for this popular Spanish-infused music program for newborns – 4 year olds for the Fall Session at the Trilok School. Our lively forty-five minute classes promote children’s musicality and development through singing, dancing, and playing instruments (shakers, bells, drums, and more).  Visit the website to register and also see other upcoming free trial classes.

TORUK – The First Flight at Barclays Center
Wednesday-Sunday September 7th-11th at various times.  Tickets start at $40.  See website for times.  Inspired by James Cameron’s Avatar, Cirque du Soleil transports you to the world of Pandora in a visually stunning live setting. Experience a storytelling odyssey through a new world of imagination, discovery and possibility.  This show is family friendly.

Thursday September 8th

2s & 3s Playgroup at Busy Bodies Brooklyn (Clinton Hill)
Thursdays 930-11a until October 27th.  $25 Walk-In Rate.  This 1 hour and 30 minute Playgroup allows children to socialize, begin to gain independence and prepare for preschool. The class includes guided open play, story time, arts & crafts and a group snack. This is a gentle separation group class which, as an option, allows parents or caregivers to leave once the child is comfortable in his/her environment. Classes are limited to 10 children. Ages: 2s/Early 3s

Transit Tots at New York Transit Museum (Downtown Brooklyn)
Thursdays 1015-11a except November 24th.  Free with admission.  For ages 2-5y with adult companion.  Stories, games and surprises for our youngest transportation fans!

Library Lab: Shadow Puppets at the Brooklyn Public Library (Bay Ridge)
Thursday September 8th 3-4p.  Free.  What do you need to cast a shadow?  Make your own shadow puppets to find out!  Library Lab is Brooklyn Public Library’s dynamic learning enrichment program for children (ages 6  to 10) and their families.  Explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math concepts with fun, free activities that will spark curiosity through hands-on experiments.  Families will receive tips on how to use library resources and how to continue projects at home.  Program is ongoing on Thursdays until October 27th.  See website for the theme of the week.

Free Trial Classes at Dancewave’s Fall Open House
Tuesday-Thursday September 6th-8th various times.  Free.  Jump-start the school year with FREE Fall Semester trial dance classes at Dancewave for Ages 24 months to 18 years. Dancewave’s Fall Semester provides quality dance training, mentorship and a supportive environment for all. Classes include “Parent & Me” Creative Movement, Ballet, Modern, Hip Hop, and more. Beach Season Extended (various NYC beaches)
Open daily until Sunday September 11th  Lifeguards are on duty daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections. Closed sections are marked with signs and/or red flags.  Beach season has been extended an additional week! All city beaches, except Cedar Grove and Wolfe’s Pond beaches, will remain open through Sunday, September 11. Cedar Grove and Wolfe’s Pond beaches will close on Labor Day.  Note: Ahead of the landfall of Tropical Storm Hermine, NYC Parks will close all City beaches to swimming on Sunday, September 4, 2016. Beaches will possibly be closed on Monday, September 5 and Tuesday, September 6. Visit nyc.gov/severeweather  for updates.

Mo Willems Story Time: From Elephants to Knuffle Bunnies at DiMenna Children’s History Museum (UWS)
Ongoing Tuesday-Friday until September 23rd at 2p.  Free with Museum admission.  For all ages.  Join us in the special exhibition The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems for readings of Willems’ beloved books every weekday!  Also visit the ongoing The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems exhibit going on until September 25th.

Summer Sports Experience at Sunset Park
Monday-Friday until September 17th. Tots Program (2-5 Years old) 915-10a, Tots Program (8 months – 3 Years old) 10-11a and 11a-12p M-F.  Free.  Other activities for ages 6-14 will be offered M-F 9:15am- 4:45pm. Activities include Soccer, Basketball, Rugby, Volleyball, Goalball, Softball and Group Games.  Kids are welcome to learn about sports from skilled Parks staff! The Summer Sports Experience provides a friendly, small group introduction to various sports on a drop-in basis. Staff are stationed in parks citywide.  At Sunset Park, kids will learn basketball, soccer and football! To find out more, please call the Sunset Park Recreation Center at (718) 972-2135.

Open Play & Activities At Recess (DUMBO)
Monday-Friday 9a-5p (will be open 9a-6p in the Fall, Winter & Spring) and Saturday and Sunday 9a–1130a*.  Drop in $30 first child, $20 per additional child.  Memberships/play packs also available for purchase.  (Please also bring socks for kids and adults.) At Recess, we understand the value of flexibility and convenience. Your kids may come in and play anytime during our scheduled play hours. We’re ready when you are!  Recess offers free weekly classes for members and drop-ins!  Recess Story Time (0 – 3 yrs), Monday at 11:00 am & Tuesday at 3:00 pm. Recess Fit (6 mos – 3 yrs), Wednesday at 11:00 am. Recess Craft (6 mos – 3 yrs), Thursdays at 3:00 pm.   *Weekend afternoons are reserved for birthday parties. (Closed Monday September 5th)

Bryant Park Juggling
Monday-Friday 12n-1p until September 30th.  Free.  Test your coordination and dexterity with free juggling lessons in the park. All skill levels are welcome to join in the fun.  Equipment will be provided.  The Bryant Park Jugglers use the park throughout the year. They are a friendly group and open to drop-ins, even if you catch them outside of the regular juggling lessons.

Outdoor Playtime & Sing-a-longs at Norman & Jules Backyard (Park Slope)

Ed Center in Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1
Tuesdays & Thursdays 3-5p and also Saturdays and Sundays from 1–5p.  Free.  The Ed Center is open for free, drop-in hours three afternoons a week! Get to know Brooklyn Bridge Park with our 250 gallon aquarium filled with critters from the East River, a 10’ scale model of Brooklyn Bridge Park, crafts, a reading corner, and much more!
