New Middle School Options for Brooklyn Students
P.S. 8’s Middle School
The middle school options for next fall have expanded for Brooklyn students. As you might know, the popular Brooklyn Heights elementary school PS 8 will open a middle school this fall 2012. Last month the DOE voted unanimously to open the middle school a few blocks away from the elementary. According to the Brooklyn Paper, “the new school will house sixth graders this fall and accommodate nearly 300 students by 2014. PS 8’s K–5 program will remain at its Hicks Street location. Before its recent resurgence, PS 8 had struggled for years. But after principal Seth Phillips arrived in 2003, the school surged in popularity, attracting so many students that the city was forced to terminate its middle school in 2004 and build a three-story annex just to fit its 600 elementary school kids.”
The middle school, composed of grades six through eight, will be co-located at George Westinghouse Information and Technology High School located on Johnson Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
International School of Brooklyn’s Middle School
International School of Brooklyn is New York’s only International Baccalaureate World School offering a language immersion program. ISB is adding a Middle School this September 2012 to expand on their Lower School program (Nursery-5th grade). ISB’s Middle School will open with 6th grade. Your child can choose from French, Spanish or English as their language immersion and there will be an Interdisciplinary Curriculum – following the IB Middle Years Programme.
